Product Overview
Schimmel’s top-quality line of instruments, the Konzert series, although a relatively new entry to the piano market, represents a higher level of quality than Schimmel had ever before achieved in their 135-year history, both in terms of design/construction and musical potential.
The Konzert series bridges the old with the new, combining the latest in computer-aided design, trailblazing new techniques, and modern CNC machinery with old-world hand craftsmanship. Warmer, darker, more powerful and easier to control, the Konzert series has been met with rave reviews by musicians across the world.
Boasting a length of 7’7”, the K230 is one of the larger grand pianos of the series, and like the 8’5” K256, falls into the semi-concert grand classification.
Subsuming many of the features from the full 9’2” K280, including the same concert-length action, the K230 competes very well with other special semi-concert grands, like the Shigeru Kawai SK-7, and the C. Bechstein C232.
Action
One of the truly remarkable accomplishments of the Konzert series grands is that they have somehow managed to incorporate the same extended-length concert grand action from the K280 into all of the smaller models. That means that the 7’7” K230 actually features a concert grand action that also happens to be about 6 inches longer than comparable concert grands.
This means the K230 delivers a deeper level of control than most comparable semi-concert grands, especially noticeable at both piano and forte dynamic levels. Aiding in this are white keys of various minerals, and black keys of real ebony.
Built by Renner but designed by Schimmel, this action receives extensive regulation prior to shipping by Schimmel’s most experienced artisans, and plays wonderfully right out of the crate.
Tone
There’s layers and layers of tone here, enveloping players in a multi-dimensional fashion. There’s an added warmth not present in Schimmel’s Classic series, and the bass response of this instrument is nothing short of staggering.
There’s rear duplex, while the mid and treble ranges utilize Schimmel’s unique triplex scaling, which adds a third string to bring out even more harmonics. Both the duplex and triplex are tunable.
There’s a new bridge design as well, which reduces the overall mass of the bridge, allowing the soundboard to resonate in a more unrestrained manner. The sustain on the K230 is ridiculously good, and this bridge design is a key reason why.
Hammers
Schimmel sources their hammer construction over to Wurzen for the hammers here, and these are the finest hammers Schimmel uses. Double felted and a mahogany core makes for a hammer that perfectly compliments the concert-length action.
Soundboard
The K230 has one of the largest soundboards of any 7 and a half foot grand piano, and is on average 15% larger than what’s typical for the size range, which of course contributes to the huge sound this piano delivers.
Mountain solid spruce of Grade AAA is specially selected for use in the K230, and is tapered to increase its resonance potential.
Add in a dynamic bar for improved dynamic response and Schimmel’s proprietary ‘Three Dimensional’ crowning, and you have a soundboard built to maximize the potential of this instrument.
Cabinet/Rim
To account for the larger size of the soundboard, the K230 features an exceptionally wide tail design along with some unique angling.
The incredibly thick rim is built with layers of both beech and mahogany, so your K230 is designed to endure for decades and decades.
