Common Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost for private piano lessons varies from teacher to teacher and school to school. The general price range annually for beginner piano students is $1200 per year for the lowest-priced schools to $5000 per year for the highest-priced schools. On the other hand, private piano teachers range from $25 per lesson to $100 per lesson.

Private instructors usually operate on a per lesson basis and seldom include extracurricular programs, activities, and courses. This is one of the things that separates the experience one has with a music school. Large music schools like Merriam Music offer a vast array of programs, performance opportunities, and extracurricular activities. You are not simply taking music lessons. You are joining a music community.

Merriam Music offers a variety of tuition rates depending on the program the student is enrolled in as well as the lesson length and specialization of the teacher. Our average cost per private lesson is more than smaller schools, but half the cost of similar private music institutions in North America. Annual tuition for a Merriam student usually ranges from $1500 to $3000 annually for approximately 40 lessons with some of the leading instructors in the world. In addition to your lessons, you also receive video logging of each of your performances, the opportunity to perform in over 15 concerts, and access to a multitude of camps, ensemble programs, and studio courses.

For more information and an exact quote for the program that best fits your specific needs, please call us at 647-417-1125.

Unlike group classes, private piano lessons are custom-tailored and curated individually to you. Study at the pace that you want and work towards your specific goals with one of the top piano teachers in the country. This personalized experience will undoubtedly keep you motivated, enthusiastic, and excited about your music education at all times.

The other benefit of piano lessons is that you will improve your cognitive ability, dexterity, coordination, creativity, and confidence. These skills and benefits are not merely applicable to music. Instead, they will be with you for your entire life and you will continue to experience the positive impact it has in all facets of life.

The vast majority of students and parents look back on their decision to enrol in piano lessons as being one of the best decisions they ever made. It is truly hard to fully articulate the incredible benefits that a music education provides.

Unlike group classes, private piano lessons are one-on-one. You will work closely with your piano instructor to tackle your specific challenges and needs at all times. The level of care and personalization in lessons plans is unparalleled. With that said, some younger students prefer to have a parent accompany them in the early phases of their music lessons. That is usually encouraged by teachers for certain age ranges as having an involved parent that can help ensure that proper practice is happening at home is one of the keys to success.

However, eventually, it is beneficial for students to attend lessons without a parent. Not only will this help foster a closer relationship with their instructor, but it will also instill a sense of personal responsibility and promote greater maturity in the student.

Finding the right teacher for private piano lessons can be a daunting task. Thankfully, Merriam Music has you covered. We have a faculty of over 100 of the best piano instructors in not just the country, but the world. Our teachers go through an extensive hiring and training process to ensure that only the best of the best are in our ranks.

We are also fortunate to have a very diverse faculty in which each instructor has a unique set of experiences and specializations that allows us to pair students with the perfect teacher that fits their needs, learning style, and interests. Rest assured that we will fully assess your situation and place you with the teacher that best aligns with your goals.

Furthermore, if your interests change and you become inspired to pursue other genres or styles of music, you will conveniently be able to continue your musical journey at the same school with one of our amazing instructors that specialize in the area that interests you.

Generally speaking, private piano lessons cost more than group lessons. However, there are of course exceptions depending on the program, level, and age range. While group lessons certainly have a plethora of social benefits that are particularly important to younger students, the personalized nature of private one-on-one lessons is as individualized of an experience as you can possibly have when studying piano.

Given the fact that your music instructor will tailor every lesson plan to your specific needs of that particular moment in your musical journey, you will ultimately have your own unique curriculum that is built fully around you. Consequently, private lessons usually come at a premium in comparison to group lessons. For more information about program and teacher options as well as pricing, please contact us.

Four to six years old is perfect. Anything up to 10 is ideal, and virtually any other age still affords a high probability of success with the right support and motivators. There is much research out there on the benefits of starting young, but we’ve found that once a child is comfortable in a structured learning environment (i.e. started Junior Kindergarten), creating and delivering engaging lesson plans becomes easier, with more consistent results.

We offer Preschool programs starting at 2, and other instruments, such as guitar or drums, require a student to be more physically developed than piano; we start them at 6 or 7, depending on the child.
