The Hazelton Brothers piano factory was founded in 1849 by brothers Henry and Frederick Hazelton in New York City, which was a hotbed for piano making in the 19th century. Eventually, their younger brother, John, joined the company and they began to thrive. Due to their quality and popularity, Hazelton Bros were one of the few companies to survive the Great Depression. Today, their pianos are still being made in South Korea by Samick Music Corporation.
While many companies of their time focused on grand pianos, Hazelton Bros actually favoured the upright design. High-end upright pianos were their most popular sellers in fact. It should come as no surprise that their contemporary Samick-produced uprights are also top-tier pianos. One example of this is the HB108 model, a 42.5” continental-style console piano.
Hazleton Bros. HB108
This used Hazleton Bros. HB108 is a fine specimen of the model. It has been well taken care of and its ebony polish finish is in excellent condition. While most pianos with a shorter scale design do not have much to offer musically, that is simply not the case with HB108. It offers an incredible tonal depth and wonderful response from its controlled action. Furthermore, thanks to Samick’s excellent build standards, the piano is incredibly durable and reliable.
At just over the $3000 price mark, this is a wonderful entry-level upright piano for a family or beginner looking to experience the nuance and magic that only real strings and a real soundboard can offer.
