HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Originally founded in 1958 as a Baldwin distributor, Samick is a South Korean musical instrument manufacturer. Continually expanding operations throughout the next several decades, Samick eventually grew into not only one of the largest piano manufacturers in the world (manufacturing pianos under several brands), but also one of the world’s largest guitar manufacturers. With the rising costs of Korean labour, the majority of Samick’s piano production now occurs in Indonesia.
In 2008, Samick acquired the famed German piano manufacturer Seiler, with the production of Seiler’s high-end line still occurring in Germany. Samick diversified the Seiler line-up by creating two sub-lines that are both manufactured in Indonesia to compete in the market at different price points. From 2009 to 2013 Samick also controlled a 32% share of Steinway & Sons, until losing their shares after being outbid when Steinway was taken private.
Samick brands currently offered for sale in North America are Seiler, Pramberger, WM Knabe and Samick branded pianos (*See brand profiles). Samick branded pianos were once offered in a variety of upright and grand sizes, but are now only offered in three sizes of grand pianos; the 5’2” NSG 158, 5’7” NSG 175, and the 6’1” NSG 186. These Samick branded pianos are offered as a more budget-friendly alternative to Samick’s other brands but are manufactured using the same CNC machinery.
Undoubtedly a major player in the piano industry, Samick represent an alternative to traditionally Japanese dominated price points.
