Being a part of a sensational live concert is essentially different from delivering an awesome musical performance in the isolation booth of a studio. Recording in a studio can be a very unnerving affair indeed because every single minute counts. There is no audience to cheer you and feed your zeal, and the microphone tends to be quite unforgiving.
Under such stressful circumstances, ‘sound preparation’ is the only keyword which can ensure that your precious time is efficiently utilized in a productive manner. Mastering the fundamental skills of recording vocals is a very simple and enjoyable process packed with several exhilarating moments!
Practicing your way to perfection
In the path of success, there are no shortcuts. Volumes of dedicated practice would surely bring in the desired benefits. Be absolutely thorough with the chords, lyrics, and work on identifying and rectifying even the minutest of errors.
Try practicing with metronomes for exercising control over the tempos of musical pieces. Playing back your recordings would help in assessing pitch inaccuracies, breath control, and other flaws. Practicing while wearing headphones, is an excellent technique of preparing yourself for recording sessions. This can be easily accomplished with a recording rig at home.
Recording your rehearsals can be of great help
Consider recording your rehearsals as an inseparable aspect of your preparation. The recordings of your rehearsal can serve as extremely useful demos which can help the recording staff in sorting out certain vital issues. You can do this using all sorts of recording devices, starting from tape recorders to your smartphone app. Here, the quality of sound is not the focus. The sole objective is to discover your drawbacks and figure out effective ways of improvement.
Getting acquainted with the necessary equipment
Those who wish to arrange for a recording system at home, all you need is a laptop equipped with a speedy and stellar internal drive. If you are in a position to invest more, then you might consider opting for an external drive. Your next step would be to look for a fantastic audio interface along with a standard microphone.
There are a number of renowned companies dealing in entry-level microphones of awesome quality, which would actually make you feel like a professional during your practice sessions! Once you have successfully managed these, get hold of appropriate software programs such as Logic Studio for fabulous recording experiences at home.
Have a proper discussion with the engineer
Developing solid and cordial rapport with your engineer prior to your recording session, always yields positive results. Providing the studio engineer with your rehearsal recordings in advance would give him a clear idea regarding the genre of sound you are opting for.
On the basis of this, he can easily ascertain the suitable types of mics, compressors and other significant things from the perspectives of engineering. A number of engineers are equipped with production skills too. Such individuals can offer you beneficial suggestions for enhancing the quality of your performance.
Enjoy a peaceful slumber the preceding night
Put all your displeasure and anxiety aside before retiring to bed on the previous night of your recording. Ungrounded fears and negativity can rob you of your sleep and lead to a terrible hangover the following day. Be calm and allow your mind to relax. Getting suitable, uninterrupted sleep is critical so that you wake up the next morning feeling absolutely fresh and confident.
Your punctuality matters a lot
This is undoubtedly one of the most crucial points to keep in mind for your recording session. You simply cannot afford to arrive late at the studio! Either be there on time or try to reach the venue earlier than the scheduled time so that you get the scope of warming up a bit, prior to your performance. Being relaxed and stress-free during recording helps in delivering a consistent performance.
Ensure that your instrument is in immaculate condition
Before arriving at the venue, do ensure that each component of your instrument is perfectly functional. You surely do not want those worn out guitar strings, drum skins or broken keys to play spoilers on one of the most eminent days of your life! If required, seek professional help for getting your intonation checked or your drums tuned, so that you are fully equipped for your recording session.
Since recording studios are really expensive, you must make it a point turn up at the venue fully prepared. It is certainly not a salient idea to rehearse tracks, experiment with new ideas, or record for trials at a place where every hour costs! Just concentrate on preparing well, and give it your best shot!

‘He Is the Spiritual Godfather of Recorded Music’: Top Producers on How George Martin Contributed to The Beatles’ Brilliance
“When I first started in the music business, the ultimate aim was to try and re-create, on record, a live performance as accurately as possible,” George Martin recalled in Kenneth Womack’s 2007 book Long and Winding Roads. “But then we realized that we could do something other than that.”
During the course of his 60-year career, the legendary Beatles producer — who died of undisclosed causes at home in England on March 8 at the age of 90 — and his willingness to experiment helped pave the way for some of the most memorable music of the 20th century. How to record studio-quality electric guitar tracks at home
With the constant advances in digital modelling technology, it’s becoming increasingly easy for just about anybody to plug a guitar into their DAW via a simple interface and record high-quality sounds.
Even built-in software modellers like Guitar Rig; widely available plugins like AmpliTube and Slate Digital/Scuffham S-Gear; or something as inexpensive as a secondhand first-generation Line 6 POD can produce results that will easily exceed an indifferently mic’d amp and speaker. Via Music Radar
HIDDEN GEMS: YOU CAN RECORD MUSIC FOR FREE AT THE D.C. PUBLIC LIBRARY’S NEW RECORDING STUDIO
Looking for a place to record a quick song or two, but don’t have the cash to pay for studio time? Your best bet could be the library.
Tucked away on the second floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library is a fully equipped recording studio, where anyone with a D.C. library card can record music, podcasts or whatever creative project they’re working on–and it’s completely free to use.
For nearly three years a recording studio has existed at the library’s teen space, but after an overwhelming demand for it, the library wanted to make it even bigger and more accessible to the public. “It was constantly booked. From that, we were able to use it as a test and realized we needed to go bigger with it,” said Maryann James-Daley, manager of The Labs at the D.C. Public Library. “It also limited the clientele, because it was in the teen center.” Via DCMD
