Most professionals still consider higher levels of playing, and certainly performance, to be the exclusive domain of acoustic pianos. However, with the advent of faster processors and more authentic-feeling key actions, digital pianos have become a viable alternative to acoustic pianos for many people just starting out on their piano adventure. As a major retailer of both acoustic and digital, we help customers through the process of deciding which might be a better choice for them all the time. Just as with new vs. used, there is never a universal ‘right answer’ for which one is a better choice – they each have their own pros and cons.
Acoustic Piano Advantages:
- Longevity: Acoustic pianos are the clear winner here. Even a modest acoustic will still deliver 20 + years of reliable use, whereas the very best digital piano would be challenged to achieve that sort of shelf-life.
- Resale Value: A direct result of the longevity, acoustic pianos can sell for as much as 60% of their purchase price, even after 10 years of use. Consequently, many dealers will offer trade-up programs on their acoustic pianos, while excluding their digitals
- Responsiveness and dynamic range: Despite the advances in sensors and tone production, an acoustic piano can still play softer, louder, and faster than a digital can. However, most people with less than 5 years of experience or instruction are not likely to find this to be a major factor.
- Aesthetics: Though individual tastes may vary, it is difficult to deny that a shiny new baby grand looks great in the front foyer.
Digital Piano Advantages:
- Cost: A decent digital can go for as low as $1000 or less, and certainly get a new student up and running through their first 2-3 years of lessons.
- Portability: For customers who need to move their instrument regularly, digital offers some pretty compelling options.
- Climate: If the instrument must go into an area where humidity and temperature are nearly impossible to regulate, digital is often a much better choice than acoustic.
- Sound control: Many of our customers now reside in town-homes, condos, and smaller living spaces. Acoustic pianos are often impractical, because of neighbour noise complaints or other family members needing to sleep / work. Digital provides an easy solution, allowing the player to put headphones on and enjoy their music with complete privacy.
- Features: With software and electonics all around us, many people are starting to experiment with integrating their smart devices with their musical instruments. There are literally limitless options available, allowing you to compose, record, share, promote, and experiment with millions of people (or other musicians) online. Although there are ways to do this with acoustic, the costs for many are prohibitive.
