Pearl River Piano: Model 109
The Pearl River piano company was started in 1956 and is currently the largest producer of pianos in the world (by volume). Currently the Pearl River company is owned and operated by the government and traded publicly on the stock exchange. The reputation of the company has wavered over the past 30 years due to quality control issues in the 1990’s. Currently Pearl River has a reputation for building low-priced value pianos suitable for entry level, and intermediate players.
Like most larger piano factories in China the Pearl River piano is sold under many different names as part of OEM agreement with many smaller and larger distributors around the world. One of the most well know relationships that Pearl River has is the Essex piano which is made by Pearl River and distributed by Steinway & Sons. Like the Boston piano made by Kawai in Japan, Essex is manufactured by Pearl River in China and is Steinway’s answer to other lower priced makes. The Essex piano is very similar to the Pearl River models except for small differences in the cosmetics and scale design.
This Pearl River upright piano model 109 was originally built in 2005 and is in excellent condition. At 44″ this would be a good entry-level piano for a family or hobbiest looking for a low priced upright to learn on. Like most Pearl River pianos this model is built to last around 20 – 25 years and still has a good 10 year of life left in it.
