Since 1862 the Baldwin piano company has been considered one of the best names in the piano industry. They started as the Baldwin Piano and Organ company and then decided to stop the production of organs and focus on pianos exclusively. For the last 40 years the Baldwin Piano company has struggled to adapt to the new market forces and competitors and has gone through a series or bankruptcy and foreclosures. First it was Kawai and Yamaha in the 1970’s, then Korean pianos in the 1980’s and new Chinese pianos. Although Baldwin piano models were of good quality, they didn’t compete well with their American counterparts Mason & Hamlin and Steinway & Sons, and they also weren’t really that much better then Kawai or Yamaha.
In 2001 the Baldwin Piano and Organ company was purchased by Gibson Guitars, who had the idea of tranforming the company, and shifting all production off shore to meet a lower pricepoint. Since then there have been a variety of different models and with a combination of different state-owned factories in China being used to build these models wih some being more succesful than others. In 2008 Gibson ceased all production in the US plant and have now moved everything to the Dongbei factory in China.
The Baldwin Piano model BH146 is the smallest baby grand from Baldwin piano concervatory line and has a good sound for the price. This would be a nice choice for a family or music teacher.
