Digital Pianos

Background

One of the most common questions that customers ask us is whether a digital or acoustic piano makes more sense.  Digital pianos definitely have their pro’s (no maintenence, portable, potentially lower upfront cost), and they also have their con’s (shorter lifespan, can’t be upgraded, very low resale, inferior musical performance).  As a result, we generally suggest that there are three or four scenarios under which digital makes sense to consider: 1) if you or the instrument move frequently  2) if volume control is critical  3) if the climate of the prospective space is difficult or impossible to control or  4) if reducing the risk of purchase is paramount (no one in the family plays, a young child is trying it for the very first time).  If any of those scenarios fit your situation, then digital is likely a good direction to look into.  If not, it is possible that an acoustic piano may deliver more value.

Recent Developments

Digital pianos have gone from being the industry’s most profitable segment to a highly competitive, low-cost product, all within the space of 10 years.  There are still strong options in the mid-range that offer quality and lasting value, but the biggest expansion has been in low-quality, feature-rich pianos from China.  Piano teachers will arm their students with the criteria of “88 notes, and make sure it’s weighted!”, completely unaware that these entry-level digitals now make that cut.  It’s like sending someone car shopping and telling them to insist on ABS and air bags – perfectly valid considerations 10 years ago, but unhelpful to a customer in today’s market.

Our focus has been to offer our customers as wide and relevant a selection as possible, bringing in the best options from the entry, mid, and high end ranges.  Whether you’re wondering about sampling vs. modeling, MDF vs. plywood, sequencing vs. arranging, portable vs. stationary, let us guide you through the maze of the modern digital piano.
